What is ADA Signage?
Did you know that about 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. have a form of disability? Consistent and predictable signage are crucial for many people’s navigation independence.
ADA signage, simply put, are signs designed and installed in public facilities to make the identification and navigation of spaces easier for people with disabilities.
In 1990, Congress passed The Americans with Disabilities Act, or the ADA, to prohibit discriminatory policies and practices against people with disabilities. Congress has since amended the original Act, and the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design are the standards that we follow for signage today.
If you’re looking for the specific language, you can find sign regulations under Sections 216 (Sign Scoping Requirements) and 703 (Sign Standards) of the ADA Standards. These two sections are where you’ll find the most relevant rules and regulations around ADA signage.
Not following ADA signage regulations carries significant penalties. Your business opens itself up to lawsuits, and violations can cause your business significant financial harm, with initial fines starting at $75,000, and an additional $150,000 for every violation after that.
Note that state and local laws may impose additional regulations and fines.

There are limited exceptions to ADA signage. ADA signage is not required in:
- Building directories
- Menus
- Seat and row designations in assembly areas
- Occupant names
- Building addresses, and
